Winter 2021 has been absolutely incredible at Deep Creek Lake! Conditions for winter sports have been amazing. Lots of snowfall and cold temps have made our area an absolute winter wonderland.
Winter 2021 Weather
Nearly every week throughout January and February, we saw snowfall. There were storms right before MLK and President’s Day weekends that brought fresh powder for skiers. It was not unusual to have 8-10 inches dropped on the area several weeks in a row. Wisp Resort is reporting 109 inches for the season so far. Temperatures are warming up a bit as we head into March, but Garrett County winters shouldn’t be underestimated.
Winter 2021 Activities
If you love winter sports, this was the year to be at Deep Creek Lake! Wisp Resort had incredible conditions. Skiers and snowboarders were frequently delighted by fluffy, fresh powder. All slopes and trails were fully open.
Cross country skiers were equally happy. It takes a really good base of natural snow in order to cross country ski. Mother Nature delivered this year. Although they did not have rentals available due to COVID, Herrington Manor and New Germany State Parks offered miles of trails for skiing. As of the end of February, there is still plenty of snow to kick and glide.
Lots of families were looking for sledding hills too. I took my boys to Herrington Manor, and we had a blast! They have a designated hill next to the park office that is tons of fun! (Bring your own sled.)
Ice fisherman have been out on the lake throughout the season thank to cold temperatures. According the Maryland Fishing Report, the ice was 5-7 inches thick in cove areas. Anglers are catching yellow perch and walleyes, fishing with bait close to the bottom where the water is warmer.
Folks have also been out and about on their snowmobiles. Our state parks have designated trails that you can use if you have an ORV sticker. You can ride at Wolf Den Run State Park or in Potomac-Garrett and Savage River State Forests. The surface of the lake is also formal snowmobiling trail, provided ice is thick enough.
Winter 2021 Real Estate
Inventory is at a record low this winter. That being said, as spring approaches, sellers are starting to perk up. Browse available listings on my site. Demand remains very high, and I have a list of buyers ready to make a move. Those who are thinking of selling a lake area home should take advantage of the current market. Whether you are buying or selling, feel free to contact me with any questions you have. I’m happy to help!
