A little about GLAF…Garrett Lakes Arts Festival began with a vision of a music festival in Garrett County.
In December 1986, a group of Garrett County residents gathered to explore that vision and a related proposal from local resident Kathryn Sincell and violinist Erick Friedman. The joint desire was to promote cultural and artistic activities in the County and to rekindle the Mountain Chautauqua spirit, once a hallmark of Garrett County life. A core of 22 citizens evolved from the originators, many of whom remained in leadership roles serving with dedication and distinction in the ensuing years. GLAF is a non-profit 501(3)(C) corporation.
Do you know the Dock Removal Deadline here at Deep Creek Lake? The great dock removal exodus has begun over the last month here at Deep Creek Lake. The water level has been dropped for the final time and most remaining docks are high and dry on the shores of the lake. You can hear the kaa-chink of crews who are working at a blazing pace trying to remove the docks before the end of the month. Remember the docks have to be removed before December 1st each year.
Here’s a link of the subject for your information. LINK… 03 Uses Permitted with a Buffer Strip Use Permit. G. From December 1 through April 1, all docks, boating and swimming structures, and mooring buoys shall be removed from the lake, and shall be secured to or removed from the buffer strip. Vehicles may be driven on the buffer strip to comply with this section.
Fall Fishing Deep Creek Lake Maryland. This year, fall fishing puts you in the pleasant “football weather” category in the 1st week of November here at the lake. The breeze gets a bit stiffer, the wind has a mild chill to it and the fishing bite lights up in its fall spender. The temperature has been a bit warmer than the past few years and you see a lot of boats late in the season trying to score a stringer full of delicious fish.
Check out http://www.fishdeepcreek.com/ for real time fishing reports, techniques and a message board that will keep you in the hunt for fresh fish.
Here is the latest report from the message board of 11/5/16-
Fished from 7 – 3 mainly on the north end with good results. Water temp was 51 at 7am and climbed to 56 at 2:30. Water was stained for the most part but the clearer water held the better fish.
Mainly SM were caught (11″ up to 15″) in the am on top water and the the afternoon was plastics fished very slow when fish were found.
1 Nice LM was caught under a dock on plastic. Caught 9 fish total and not a bad day on DCL. All fish were caught in 10-20 FOW.
Come join us over the next couple of weeks and wet a line before the lake starts its traditional freeze. Next fishing season is the popular ice fishing season which can be mega-productive!

Heading into winter, our minds tend to shift toward ski-oriented properties, but there is actually still a decent supply of homes in all parts of the lake – north, south & central as well as outer lying areas within just 15-20 minutes of the lake.
Some homeowners would rather not carry their properties for another winter and are more apt to negotiate this time of year. Because we have less vacation traffic in the shoulder season, it’s easier to get into Deep Creek real estate properties that may be on the vacation market as well as the sales market. The Autumn Glory Festival 2016 Deep Creek Lake. There are a few towns in this wonderful country we live that have a unique and special way about them when it comes to the Autumn/Fall season. Downtown Oakland, Maryland, which is just a hair outside of Deep Creek Lake, blooms like a rare and cherished flower around the Autumn season. They boast the famous Autumn Glory Festival, which goes on for five wonderful days as we peak in the fall season. The many fun events that are hosted by this popular festival are as special as the breathtaking fall foliage itself.
Here are some of the events that were a huge hit this year: Antique Show, Autumn Glory Kick-Off Reception & Dinner, Autumn Glory Sale at Simon Pearce, Banjo & Mandolin Championship, Bear Creek Traders Autumn Glory Tent Sale, Bingo, Classic Car Show, Corn Maze, Craft Shows, Live Downtown Entertainment, Downtown Farmers Market, Fiddle Championship, Fireman’s Parade, Grand Feature Parade, Historic Mt. Lake Park Tours, Horseback Trail Rides, Ice Cream Eating Contest, Oktoberfest Dinner, Great Pumpkin Race & Festival, Ski & Snowboard Swap, Southern Girls Basketball Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser, Tournament of Bands, Woodlake Tree Farm Autumn Glory Sale.
Locals love the Oompah night during the Fireman’s Parade which was standing room only this year with the addition of the local band Boathouse after the Oompah band finished up. My little boys loved watching the many firetrucks come during the popular night time parade.
The Autumn Glory parade itself is definitely the star of this 5-day event. Some folks have been going since they were little children. This year the weather was perfect in the upper 60’s/lower 70’s and the leaves looked spectacular looking down this Mayberry-resembling town. The participation is always impressive and the streets were lined with adults and children ready to enjoy a wonderful day together. How can you not love clowns, Shriners, tractors, beauty queens, floats, Scottish bagpipes, cheerleaders, marching bands, horses, firetrucks, antique hotrods, mountaineers in coonskin caps, political delegate’s and Maryland’s Governor??
Did I mention that Travel & Leisure ranked Oakland Maryland #2 America’s Best Towns for Fall Colors? Nuff said… Check it out.
October Fall Foliage Gallery Deep Creek Lake. Here are some fall photos that I have taken over the last few days. The weather has been pleasant in the high 60’s and lower 70’s over the last few days. Friday we will see a drop into the mid 50’s. What a fine October it has been here at Deep Creek Lake. We are inching past the fall foliage peak here so be sure and pay us a visit here soon before winter plays her hand.
“In the other gardens
And all up the vale,
From the autumn bonfires
See the smoke trail!
Pleasant summer over
And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes,
the grey smoke towers.
Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all,
Flowers in the summer
Fires in the fall! “
– Robert Louis Stevenson, Autumn Fires
Here we are, early October and the weather could not be more perfect. The temperatures are stabilizing in the lower 60’s during the days and upper 40’s at night. The lake has a cooler, relaxing vibe this time of year and you find a few folks spending a little time on the lake enjoying the quietness. The leaves are starting their transformation here as the maple’s start to show peeks of their stunning beauty. Life here in the Fall gears down and life seems to get a little simpler as we tentatively tip toe toward winter. The sweatshirts seem cozier and the hot chocolate taste’s more delicious as the mild humidity of summer vanishes, unmissed. We look ahead to The Autumn Glory Festival and Halloween which makes letting summer go a little bit easier. Breakdown each season of your life and make them the best ever. Deep Creek Lake gives you the opportunity and backdrop to make special memories that are sure to be tattooed deep in your mind. Come visit us here at the lake and let your worries disappear and your senses come alive. Be one with this diamond in the rough jewel called Deep Creek Lake that we are so lucky to have here in Maryland
