Weekly updates by Betsy Spiker Holcomb of Taylor-Made Vacations and Sales, Deep Creek Lake. As you already know, I never get tired of singing the praises of Swallow Falls State Park. This weekend we did the loop hike and met some really fun visitors from Baltimore and Northern Virginia. Even after the damaging “Sandy” storm we still see a solid stand of ancient hemlock trees towering over the forest. For some visitors, it was their first glimpse of the awesome aura put off by these majestic trees that stand guard over the powerful Youghiogheny River. We finished our hike, as always, at the calming Tolliver Falls. The water is flowing at a slow and tranquil pace which makes the falls even more calming and was apparent by the group of people entranced by the sights and sounds of this special nook of the park.

Fall golfers…Be advised that the Oakland Country Club is having a late season special until the end of the month. Bring a foursome of golfers and play for $100.00 with a cart Monday-Thursday, $25 a head! Wow, you’d think we are still in the 80’s!

New restaurant alert! As you pass through the town of Accident on the way to Deep Creek Lake you will notice a re-opened cafe on the right across from the car dealership called The Moonshadow Café & Bar. The food is all local – from the meats, cheeses and vegetables. With less than a week under its belt, it has become the talk of the town so don’t miss giving it a try next visit. FYI, this Friday is a Halloween Party if you like to play dress up.

Speaking of Halloween parties, Deep Creek Lake has THE costume party at the lake!!  Black Bear Tavern and Restaurant has long been the go-to place for the ghouls and goblin lovers as they pull in all the folks from in and out of town who like to get dressed up and dance the night away. If you have a will to be weird and fun, then make a special trip and take on your favorite Halloween character. Tell the owners Laura and Barry Clapsaddle hello.

From the real estate front, the September market numbers are all up versus a year ago, as you will see on the attached report.  We have two featured listings this week.  First, is a quaint home in a lush, garden setting with a large, open main level and a 3-car garage and a Price Reduction http://vt.realbiz360.com/Listing-1032448.html.  Also, we just listed a great lakefront home site on Stockslager Road with 135’ of waterfront and a Type A dock permit http://mrislistings.mris.com/DE.asp?ID=54711201519.

Now is a great time to look at real estate.  With the fall season winding down and snow on the way (yes, this week!!) fewer of our homes are booked making it easy to show them with a moment’s notice.  Enjoy your week!

The exterior of this three bedroom, two bathroom home graces a quiet cove of DeepCreekLake on Clark Lohr Road with elegance and style. Four decks provide plenty of room for entertaining guests and the outdoor grilling kitchen adds a place where the breeze takes away the heat from cooking on those hot summer nights.

Site and View:  It is not easy to locate a special building site at Deep Creek Lake – one that has nearly 350’ of lakefront instead of 100’…one that has 5.29 acres instead of ½ – 1 acre and especially…one that has an unobstructed view of Deep Creek Lake.  Six parcels make-up this one-of-a-kind gem, which includes a vacant lakefront lot for added privacy or future expansion.  The detached 24 x 26 two-story garage sits on one of the rear sites and is great for storage.

"Red Roof House" aka Emerald Oaks... Deep Creek Lake CLASS...

It took a special person, one who was a real estate developer and as astute a purchaser, to assemble this estate with all of these special features.

"Red Roof House" aka Emerald Oaks... Deep Creek Lake CLASS..."Red Roof House" aka Emerald Oaks... Deep Creek Lake CLASS...

As you walk through Emerald Oaks and admire the use of native wood species utilized in the finishing of this home, it is easy to understand that only a timber baron could have assembled such a variety of local and rare hardwoods.  Now you can enjoy the natural warmth and beauty of wood in each room, while gaining a continual appreciation of these natural resources.  Some of the extravagant and beautiful woods used in the interior finishing include: oak, curly maple, sourwood, butternut, ash, wormy chestnut, hickory and cherry.  Each bedroom is dressed in a different species to showcase the unique wood grains and give them their own special feel.

"Red Roof House" aka Emerald Oaks... Deep Creek Lake CLASS...

Stop for a moment and enjoy the kitchen cabinetry, built from curly maple and understand what you’re seeing.  Curly maple is not a species of wood, but rather a rare phenomenon that occurs in only 2% of maple trees.  The ripples in the grain pattern create the three-dimensional effect.  This wood is so special that you will usually find it in works of art or in the construction of guitars and violins.  In fact, one of its nicknames (fiddleback maple) originates from the fact that the backs and sides of violins were made from it.

Energy efficiency:  Although the size and uniqueness of the property makes it appear as though no expense was spared in the construction, it is amazing to understand the original owner’s frugality when it came to recurring energy costs.  The geothermal heating system and “in floor” heat distribution were all designed to make annual energy consumption as low as possible.  As an auxiliary system, the whole house generator runs on propane and serves as a wonderful back-up alternative.

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Wisp Labor Day Sale

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Wisp Labor Day Sale. The end of the summer is approaching like a freight train and I am very happy to have finally had a chance to get on the lake with family. Our oldest sons, Brendon and Peyton, and their girlfriends came up last week to visit with little brother Griffin. They ziplined, rode the mountain coaster, went for a swim at Swallow Falls, jet skied to the southern end of the lake, enjoyed some Brenda’s Pizza (their favorite DCL pizza), and had ice cream at Huey’s. I had a busy week of appointments but caught up with them to go white water rafting at ASCI, a sunset paddleboard session and an amazing dawn patrol wakeboarding/slalom ski session. We also took little Griffin on his first pontoon boat ride (with the older boys tubing the whole way) to Dutch’s Daughter for lunch on the veranda. I suggest you come visit this weekend and cram it all in. Here are some photos of the 4 days of fun!

Check out the fishing report here at the lake as well as any information regarding boat rentals, tackle suppliers and hot spots (If anyone shares their secret spot). I can give you the best fishing tip for the serious angler… Get out there EARLY! As you know fish have a tendency to feed early in the mornings but more importantly you want to get out there before the boat traffic.

Chances are they caught some fish… Early bird gets the worm, which gets the fish:).

It is tennis time again and the 92nd Annual Western Maryland Tennis Championships will be held August 1-4th.   Played on red clay, the tournament is sanctioned by the USTA.  Our cooler mountain air makes playing in August tolerable.  Below is a link to the web site for the tournament as well as a link to the entry form.  Cut-off for signup is Tuesday July 30th.   Even if you don’t play, come watch some great tennis.

The real estate market at Deep Creek continues to show some healthy signs as activity continues to show strength through the summer. If you have interest in buying a second home here at the lake, I would advise getting started before the interest rates creep up.

Dock Dogs McHenry Maryland. Dock Dogs is leaving positive footprints throughout the world as it currently continues to grow in popularity among all ages, races, and creeds.  Deep Creek Lake was very fortunate to once again have these talented canines and dedicated owners display physical talents that would parallel Michael Jordan in human terms. I was lucky enough to catch these wonderful doggies competing in both long and high jump competitions and I can tell you with certainty that these dock dogs rock!

A little “tail” wind…

Full extension in the clouds!

It was absolutely apparent that the dogs were having just as much fun, if not more, than the spectators. The owners of these special pets would get their dogs revved up during the 30-second time limit they had to complete their jump and every one had their own pre-jump ritual. After they set the dogs loose to make the big jump it was fun to watch not only the dogs jump, but also to see the way the owners moved and gyrated.  They used body language techniques to “make” their dog sail through the air higher and in some cases defying the laws of physics by moving to the left and right while in the air!

Greeting from Deep Creek Lake-Gran Fondo-Sailing School
Betsy Spiker Holcomb Deep Creek Lakes favorite Realtor

Greeting from Deep Creek Lake-Gran Fondo-Sailing School. This past weekend was the 4th annual Gran Fondo.  Over 1200 riders took to the beautiful back roads of Deep Creek and Garrett County on rides ranging from 22 miles to the infamous Diabolical Double…125 miles.   Riders started at 7am and some were still riding at 6pm.   Weather was exceptionally hot for the lake in June (low 80’s) making the ride even more difficult.   My teammate and Buyer Specialist, Kathy Johnson, has promised her husband she will do the 44 mile ride next year on their tandem bicycle.  Stay tuned!

Something to consider next year… I have been spending the week learning the basic sailing fundamentals at Deep Creek Lake Sailing School.  On day 3, I am already solo-ing with other students and putting the heat on the veteran sailors on the race courseJ.   A lot of the students are on their 3rd to 5th year of sailing and they annually take off a week to enjoy the course and brush up on advanced sailing techniques.  All kidding aside, you better sign-up in advance as the class is always booked.  They hold the school twice each summer at the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Club.

Just a quick hint for your primary home or your vacation home.   I’ve had several requests in the last 10 days asking what lockbox I would recommend they use for their home.  This is one of the best investments I have made.  Combination is very easy to change.

Our featured listing for this week is a great mountain home in the Sunset Ridge community of McHenry close to Wisp.  Never been rented; exceptionally clean and new-feeling.  http://vt.realbiz360.com/Listing-1304165.html

Our market in DCL is gaining momentum, especially since the interest rate hike.  We’ve seen rates go from 3.875% to 4.75% on a 30-year fixed (conforming – under $417,000).  Some project that they will come down but I wouldn’t wait to find out!  However, there are still some good loan programs.  One of our clients was just quoted a 3.175% rate on a 10/1 ARM from a local bank.  That’s hard to pass up!  The inventory is up with plenty of homes to choose from.  Most owners list their properties this time of year in time for the summer selling season.  We are still seeing some great deals for buyers.  If you’d like for us to do an updated property search for you just shoot us a quick email or call with your search criteria.
