I can give you the best fishing tip for the serious angler… Get out there EARLY! As you know fish have a tendency to feed early in the mornings but more importantly you want to get out there before the boat traffic.

It is tennis time again and the 92^nd Annual Western Maryland Tennis Championships will be held August 1-4^th. Played on red clay, the tournament is sanctioned by the USTA. Our cooler mountain air makes playing in August tolerable. Below is a link to the web site for the tournament as well as a link to the entry form. Cut-off for signup is Tuesday July 30^th. Even if you don’t play, come watch some great tennis.

The crowds fell in love with these Olympian dawgz who were fired up about showing their skills and had their owners sweating trying to take home 1^st place. Check out more details.

Tomorrow, July 3^rd, starts the popular Stage Wisp Concert Series with music by The Steve Hussey Band starting at 6pm and wrapping up at 8:30pm. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, kids, dogs and come relax on the bunny slope at Wisp Resort. This is really a nice chill event that has a cult following by locals and some out-of-towners. July 4^th On the Mountain is a few days away!!! I always get the Marshall Tucker song “Fire On the Mountain” in my head during the week of July 4^th. I can tell you that the excitement and anticipation comes to a peak for Garrett County for this famous event here at the lake. Find a vantage point from the lake on a boat, on the ski slopes, on highway 219, or any place with a view of the Adventure Park at Wisp. The start time for the event is at dusk on July 4^th with a rain date of July 5^th.

Dock Dogs McHenry Maryland

Dock Dogs McHenry Maryland. Dock Dogs is leaving positive footprints throughout the world as it currently continues to grow in popularity among all ages, races, and creeds. Deep Creek Lake was very fortunate to once again have these talented canines and dedicated owners display physical talents that would parallel Michael Jordan in human terms. I was lucky enough to catch these wonderful doggies competing in both long and high jump competitions and I can tell you with certainty that these dock dogs rock!

It was absolutely apparent that the dogs were having just as much fun, if not more, than the spectators. The owners of these special pets would get their dogs revved up during the 30-second time limit they had to complete their jump and every one had their own pre-jump ritual. After they set the dogs loose to make the big jump it was fun to watch not only the dogs jump, but also to see the way the owners moved and gyrated. They used body language techniques to “make” their dog sail through the air higher and in some cases defying the laws of physics by moving to the left and right while in the air!

Dogs had fun, owners gained a few grey hairs, and spectators fell in love with every dog as well as getting Dockdogs deeply ingrained in their hearts! Don’t miss it next year!

Sailing Deep Creek Lake-Deep Creek Lake Sailing School

I was showing property this weekend starting at Thousand Acres when I discovered something with my clients while checking out a waterfront property/dock. I have been on this lake for over 6 summers but have never seen the amount of sailboats out and about, although I have understood that it is the norm. Without sounding corny, you could almost liken the movement of the numerous sailing rigs on the water to a gripping scene at a fine ballet with a symphony playing some world renowned score.

There was a calm amongst the chaos as boats zig zagged through random trajectories trying to juggle the jib, tiller, battens, turn buckle, chain plates, cleats and winches (yeah, I googled those terms!). Actually, the two person crews that captain these sailing rigs had an immense amount of experience and it only seems chaotic for a novice like me…BUT NOT FOR LONG!

I have signed up for the adult Deep Creek Sailing School to get my “wings” or “anchor” or what every term is used after you become a veteran Sailor. After all, my father was a submariner which is kind of close to an actual sailor, so there are bloodlines! DeepCreekSailingSchool offers a week-long sailing school for both adults and juniors beginning with the basics and working up to being able to sail with confidence with any deckhand who has ever swabbed a deck. I talked to a friend last night who has vast experience in sailing who told me that the first thing to do is get a deep understanding of the winds and then apply it to the information learned at the sailing school and that’s just what I’m going to do.

Don’t ever feel it’s too late to find a new passion or love. Life is too short not to find new and exciting things and sailing is at the top of the list at the moment.

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Summer Activities-McHenry, Maryland History. This weekend is a little slow on events but never comes up shy on the vast amount of summer activities. The tubers and fishermen have been steady on the lake as the weather remains perfect here at the lake. I noticed local ski and wakeboard instructor Greg Rouse on the water barefoot skiing at 6am a few days back, which is the most exciting/interesting thing I have seen on the lake.

Deep Creek Marina has recently acquired the popular Lakeside Club from DC Development and has re-directed the course from how it operates. 26th McHenry Highland Festival-June-1st 2013. Ok, let’s try to gain a basic understanding of what the 26th McHenry Highland Festival is all about. Let me just run through some events and activities and see if this annual event peaks your interest.

Celtic Climbing Walls, Clans and Geneaology, Sheep and Highland cattle, Harpist Lynne Barnes, Garrett Highlands Pipes and Drums, Pipes and drums of St. Andrews, Irish Dance, Parade of Clans, Clan Chieftain Fiddler Bonnie Rideout, Shanty Irish, Sword Players, Scottish County Dancing and many more events to take you to a faraway ancient world.

I have attended over the last few years and can tell you this is a birds-eye look back in time to roots some of us share. Regardless, we all share in our histories, some fascinating music diversity, cultural wonders and competitive games that have molded who we all are. I watched last year what seemed to be “he-men” picking up a telephone sized tree and throwing it end over end a heck of a long way. I got a hernia just watching. Also, another group of lads picked up this heavy iron weight with a big round handle and heaved it vertically over a pole vault high bar. Livestock, Kilts, Clans, and that soothing and influencing Celtic music make this event a must for you and your family. If you are here at the lake this weekend, follow the pied piper Celtic bagpipe aura that will surround the lake and pull you toward the drums that sounded hundreds of years ago.

I got up at 6:00am and went for a quick paddleboard run before work and can tell you that we are having an amazing day. A very special McHenry Highland Festival this coming weekend. After 20 years, this will be internationally acclaimed Scottish fiddler Bonnie Rideout’s last year performing at the Festival. Bonnie never ceases to amaze us and music just doesn’t need to be better than this. Don’t miss it! There will be two performances on Saturday, June 1^st at 11am and again at 1:45pm. Also, they will have plenty of crafts and food vendors to make for a full day of family enjoyment. On a different subject, we, along with most of the country, had interesting weather for the Memorial Day weekend. Although quite a cold weekend, temperatures are transforming to perfect today. I still love this time of year. Our Spiker Team colleague and friend, Kathy Johnson, was able to capture this “secret” garden in Garrett County a couple days ago. What a gorgeous photo of her Zen garden!

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Summer Activities. It gets easier to be revved up for summer when you start seeing the boats filtering on the lake. Yesterday there was a mix of recreational tubers, fisherman, and marinas tuning up boats for their clients. Weather has warmed up to summer temps this week and you can tell folks are starting to gather into the lake. Last night I did my evening paddleboard between 7:30pm-9:00pm and saw some late evening fisherman and a few boats screaming by trying to ensure that their boats are running smoothly. I cruised past a family of at least a dozen who were throwing football and roasting smores around a fire pit near the water’s edge. I love summer!

In case you missed the USA Canoe/Kayak Whitewater Slalom Team Trails this weekend, here is a photo gallery on our Deep Creek Lake, Maryland Facebook page of some of the action. Remember this will determine who will be competing in next year’s ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships of 2014 between September 16-21, 2014. We had three Olympic medalists here competing this weekend. Look ahead in your calendar if you plan on visiting because this is no small event. Word is that lots of people will have to stay out of town because all rentals will be booked. This event will be the biggest event ever hosted here at the lake. The eyes of the world and Canoe/Kayak community will be focused on Deep Creek Lake for a week. Plan far in advance so you don’t miss it!

If you have not visited ASCI or tried to go whitewater rafting I highly recommend it! There are only a few re-circulating whitewater courses in the world and we are lucky to have the best here in our back yard.

This weekend we have the Tom Wallisch Rail Jam at Wisp Resort on Saturday, May 25^th. Registration is between 6pm-7pm with the competition starting soon thereafter. They say there is plenty of snow to hold this event and I hope you have a chance to go check out some of the skiers and snowboarders competing. The Tom Batcherlor Band will provide the music.

Not sure what direction to go this weekend? A few suggestions…

Go zip lining, ride the mountain coaster, or go for a dune buggy ride at Wisp Resort. Go hiking or rock climbing at Fork Run Recreational Area. Go get some hot wings and a crabcake from The Black Bear. Go visit the magnificent waterfalls at Swallow Falls State Park. Go rent a boat, canoe, kayak or paddleboard from Deep Creek Marina.
