Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Upcoming Events-Year End Sales. We have seen some great crowds from the holiday weekend and the fresh snow we received each day made for nice morning powder. If you are traveling here tomorrow please take caution; we are under a winter storm warning beginning tomorrow at 4:00AM through Tuesday at 10:00PM. Expected accumulation is 6 to 8 inches. Thankfully, we have excellent road crews that make it possible for us to get out and about during times like these.

Weekly updates by Betsy Spiker Holcomb of Taylor-Made Vacations and Sales, Deep Creek Lake. We hope you are well rejuvenated from a long, holiday break! The slope conditions were great over the last few weeks and those who spent their time off here took advantage. Some big news from our household – Griffin will become a big brother in mid-June and he started walking between Christmas & New Year’s. The timing couldn’t have been better. His first major steps were taken at my in-laws home while the whole family cheered with excitement. To see him walk across the living room was magnificent!
Wishing You and Your Family a Healthy and Prosperous 2014! The Holcomb’s – Bob, Betsy, Brendon, Peyton & Griffin
The arctic temperatures are here and will continue to decline sending us into a deep freeze over the next 24-48 hours. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning for Garrett County and schools have already been canceled for tomorrow. From the NWS web alert – as low as 50 below due to temperatures around 20 below tonight, and winds west 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Impacts: frost bite and hypothermia are a certainty if precautions are not taken. Icy surfaces will lead to poor driving conditions. Additional information can be found on their site and here is another good website locals use for weather http://www.garrettcollege.edu/weather/ (scroll down and click on Forecast, Garrett County, MD).
Some other important things to remember during winter advisories are your pipes and the possibility of power outages. If your home has been winterized and the pipes have been drained then I would think you have not much to worry about, but if your home has not been winterized and you are struck with a power outage it may not be a bad idea to have things checked out. To check for outages visit http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/mdwv_.html. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that no one loses power! On a brighter note, the high on Wednesday is 21°, Thursday is 33° and Friday is 42°. Just in time for the weekend!

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Deep Creek Dunk-January MLS Stats. Fluffy powder lined the deck of our home this morning with steady snow dumping throughout the night and into the morning tapering off around noon. Wisp Resort had perfect conditions today as the snow making guns were turned off and shin-high powder was on with light crowds. 14 trails are open along with the tubing park and snow making operations are marching ahead to ensure that the mountain will be completely open by the Christmas Holidays. I hope you have your lodging booked in anticipation of enjoying some fresh powder or perfectly groomed corduroy for the 2013/2014 winter sports season. It’s time to get here and release all that pent-up adrenaline!

Dock Dogs McHenry Maryland. Dock Dogs is leaving positive footprints throughout the world as it currently continues to grow in popularity among all ages, races, and creeds. Deep Creek Lake was very fortunate to once again have these talented canines and dedicated owners display physical talents that would parallel Michael Jordan in human terms. I was lucky enough to catch these wonderful doggies competing in both long and high jump competitions and I can tell you with certainty that these dock dogs rock!
It was absolutely apparent that the dogs were having just as much fun, if not more, than the spectators. The owners of these special pets would get their dogs revved up during the 30-second time limit they had to complete their jump and every one had their own pre-jump ritual. After they set the dogs loose to make the big jump it was fun to watch not only the dogs jump, but also to see the way the owners moved and gyrated. They used body language techniques to “make” their dog sail through the air higher and in some cases defying the laws of physics by moving to the left and right while in the air!
Dogs had fun, owners gained a few grey hairs, and spectators fell in love with every dog as well as getting Dockdogs deeply ingrained in their hearts! Don’t miss it next year!

42nd Annual Wisp Labor Day Sale-Wisp Outdoors Sale 2012. This weekend is very exciting because it is the famous annual Rudy’s Wisp Labor Day Sale and Wisp Outdoors Sale! My phone has been blowing up with calls from clients wanting to get a big jump on competing shoppers for the mega blowout sale. In my best used car salesman voiceJ, “the deals are crazzzzy!”
Rudy’s will be hosting their 42nd Annual Labor Day Sale in Wisp’s Lodge from Friday, August 31st through Monday, September 3rd and I can’t reiterate enough the savings you will receive on skis, snowboards, winter apparel, and the list goes on and on. I’m talking discounted warehouse prices on last year’s inventory. No joke! People who have experienced this sale before put it on their yearly schedule and are first in line to fill up their arms with mountains of winter sports gear.
Hours are:
Friday- 9am-8pm
Saturday-9am-8pm
Sunday- 9am-6pm
Monday -9am-4pm
Questions call 301-387-4640 or email info@rudysatwisp.com.
Wisp Outdoors also has an annual sale that equally compares to the Rudy’s sale! They take their demo and rental paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes at the end of every season and sell them over the Labor Day Weekend at discounted rates. There are a lot of people literally counting down the seconds until this sale starts so they can pounce on this sought after recreational gear. Get there early and scoop up a deal! Remember that this is the best time of the season (in my opinion) to enjoy these sports on the lake. It’s warm, calm and glassy this time of year…
